Fluorescent Light Disposal and Lamp Tube Recycling

If Fluorescent Light Disposal, Lamp Tube Recycle, Bulb, Strip Collection, and all things related to fluorescence is what you are looking for, this is the place to be!

Hello all,

Along with my business partner, I run a waste disposal company in the UK called AA Waste and are finding that there is a much greater need for the disposal and recycling of Fluorescent lighting items, such as mercury filled tubes, strips and bulbs. This is due to the new stringent rules and regs from the authorities and for the need to be more green and environmentally friendly.

Due to the fact that all Fluorescent Lights and lamps and light disposal compact fluorescents are now classed as Hazardous Waste , once spent within the UK, companies and individuals are constantly getting in touch asking for further information on the subject and on fluorescent light disposal and the safety aspects of it.

Fluorescent light disposal waste has become a very hot topic of discussion, therefore I have set up this page so as to be a kind of central link for all things fluorescent. With that in mind anything that I can find that is related to Fluorescent Lights, Lamps, Bulbs, Strips, or the disposal, storage, collection or recycling , or even fluorescent light disposal landfill information, then I will attempt to add to this hub. This can include anything to do with the dangers of fluorescent light pick up after breakages and also transportation of fluorescent light disposal waste.

We dedicate ourselves in helping you with all your fluorescent light, strip, lamp, bulb and tube collection, recycle or disposal needs. We are based in three areas of the UK, Woking, Surrey, Chard in Somerset and Southampton in Hampshire. We provide a UK national collection for light fluorescent tube recycling/ fluorescent light mercury recycling service for fluorescent light tubes, lamps, strip lights and light bulbs at very short notice or as an ongoing service for businesses and local authorities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. So if you have a need for fluorescent light disposal, lamps, lights, strips or bulbs for collection, or storage in Leeds, Liverpool, London or Bristol, it doesn’t really matter where you are within the UK, we are an honest and friendly business waiting to help you.

We prefer to use recycling routes over landfill. Fluorescent light tubes are a recyclable item, therefore along with our business partners this is the route we prefer. We will collect your spent fluorescent light tubes via our fluorescent light disposal/collection service at your convenience. They are taken to a fully licensed recycling centre, where our business partners use advanced, state of the art equipment and British technology to remove contaminants and neutralize sodium. Useable fluorescent lamp materials are processed and separated for recycling. Mercury is recovered from the lamps and reused. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals are recycled in the industry and the tube glass is reused.

If this fluorescent light disposal and removal service would be of interest to you or if you would like a no obligation quotation head over to our main web page by clicking the link below, or alternatively google AA Waste. http://fluorescentlamp.wordpress.com/

Did you know that when transporting fluorescent lights and lamps on UK roads they are not classed as Hazardous Waste. But for the purpose of disposal and recycling they are.

This is why landfilling fluorescent tubes in the UK is now illegal!

Did you know that the word Fluorescence originates from the word Fluorite, also known as fluorspar. It is a halide mineral composed of calcium fluoride.

The word fluorite means to flow and is originated from the Latin word fluo. This mineral has a fairly low melting point and has been used as a flux in smelting. Fluorite gave its name to the amazing phenomenon of fluorescence, which is quite prominent in fluorites, or impurities in certain types of crystals and can only be found in certain parts of the world.

My fluorescent lights keep making an anoying humming noise. Please can you help to stop me going mad by telling me how to stop this from happening?

Thanks

A loose magnetic ballast can be the cause of ballast hum. This can be caused by the ballast overheating due to tube flicker. Check that ballast mounting screws are tight to stop vibration. If the hum is louder than usual or unbearable then the ballast may need to be replaced. Since this is the most expensive part it may well be worth buying a complete new fixture. Don't leave it too long as they have been known to overheat!

This is a great resource! People may intend to try to do right by the earth and be green, but sometimes we don't know what to do and how to do it. Thanks for enlightening us.

Many of us know that fluorescent lighting is common in work areas and schools. It is the long tubes that run in ceilings, right? Fluorescent lighting is more then just that. In fact it is one of the most energy efficient types of lighting on the market today.

In the world we live in, fluorescent lights come in many different shapes and sizes. Fluorescent bulbs can be compact fluorescent as well as the larger, more common ones. Fluorescent light bulbs can be found in fluorescent light fixtures and even in fluorescent lamps. These types of light, fluorescent that is, are becoming more popular do to the cost effectiveness they offer. These lights are 4 to 6 times more efficient than incandescent light. Many people use incandescent lights because the light they produce is warmer then fluorescent and this can be a benefit in a home. But, so can saving some money on fluorescent lighting.

If you are interested in finding out more about fluorescent lighting, try searching online. If you do not know of any websites already, do a search, you will have many options to choose from. You can learn more about how fluorescent lights work, what they can do for you, and where you can purchase these lights for your home or work space. Or, if you would rather look at them in person, try going to a lighting specialty store and looking around. There you will find many more options to fluorescent lighting.

Consider fluorescent lighting for your home. Doing so can save you a lot of money because of home energy efficient they can be. Also, look for fluorescent lighting fixtures and lamps in department stores and specialty stores or even online. They can be just as stylish and natural looking as common items are. You may just find something that you really like in the fluorescent world!

Hi

I have three fluorescent lamp tubes in my house that need to be disposed of. I was wondering if it is possible to take them to the local tip and if they take them do they charge for this? I am in the UK.

Thanks

Hi Jane,

As you state you are from the UK. Most local tips have the facility to take fluorescent tubes from the general public in small batches, however if you are disposing on behalf of a company or business then they have to be sent to a special reycling center or waste transfer site, via an official waste carrier such as AA Waste. There would be a charge for this.

Saying that, fluorescent lights of any kind in the UK are not classed as hazardous waste in transport, but are classed as hazardous waste when disposing!! This may well be different in the USA. Does anyone from the US know the answer??

An Interesting Article from www.CapitalCityWeekly.com

Alaska Cruise Association donates bulb recycling system to city of Juneau

Capital City Weekly

JUNEAU - The Alaska Cruise Association has donated a fluorescent bulb recycling system to the community of Juneau.

"Bulb Eaters are aboard many of the cruise ships that visit Alaska and have proven to be a safe way to dispose of used fluorescent bulbs," said Bruce Bustamante, on behalf of the Alaska Cruise Association.

"This system is a win-win for the health and safety of our capital city because now we will have a way to safely recycle spent bulbs," said Jim Penor, Solid Waste Coordinator for the City and Borough of Juneau

"This is a good example of how the cruise industry can share its cutting-edge technology with Alaskans," said Juneau Mayor Bruce Botelho.

Juneau will maintain the Bulb Eater and house it at the household hazardous waste facility in Lemon Creek. Residents will be able to drop off used fluorescent bulbs on collection event days free of charge.

The Bulb Eater, manufactured by Air Cycle Corporation of Illinois, is a machine that crushes spent fluorescent lamps into small fragments. The crushed glass is compacted into a 55-gallon drum for safe disposal. The machine offers better storage of lamps, easier handling, is safer for people and the environment and it reduces recycling costs.

The Alaska Cruise Association has donated Bulb Eaters to communities throughout Alaska.
